All baby Cockatiels come closed-banded for permanent identification. Contrary to popular rumors, closed bands are completely safe. There is no split that can get caught on things, and they cannot be closed tighter on the leg. Our Cockatiels are banded using lightweight aluminum bands that are traceable back to us for the life of the bird. Each band features our name, the hatch-year, and the baby's order of hatch within that year.

All Cockatiel babies are also either DNA sexed (via lab blood sample) or Nest Sexed (we know their gender positively based on their parent's genetics.) DNA sexed babies will come home with their DNA certificate and Hatch Certificate. Nest Sexed babies go home with their Hatch Certificate. We NEVER guess the gender! If we are unsure, we DNA.

What does "Split to" Mean?

To the everyday new owner, it means very little. It is simply a genetic notation of what the bird carries and will pass on to any offspring if they were bred. The only split that can be seen visually is pied. A bird that is split to pied will have telltale "spots" (called ticks, or tick marks) on the nape of their neck. A bird that is split to anything will look just like any other "normal" of that mutation, only they will pass along the gene they are split to when bred.
